WHEN THE MAJORITY DOESN’T WANT IT,
HOW CAN LEGISLATION BE PASSED?

Thoughts from article by Thomas Sowell syndicated columnist in
THE WASHINTON TIMES Monday, January 4, 2010

Supporters of government health insurance call its passage “historic.” The arrogance in the way it was conceived and passed may be “historic.” This legislation is not about improving the health of the American people, it is about President Obama winning a political “victory” at any cost.
The legislation will not go into effect until after the 2012 presidential election so the public will not know whether it is good or bad until it is too late for the voters to hold the administration accountable.

What is historic about this legislation? Previous administrations gave up the idea of government controlled health care when it was clear the voting public did not want it. This is the first administration to show that it doesn’t care what the public wants. This legislation is not about the public’s health, but about Mr. Obama’s ego and his chance to impose his will and leave a “legacy.”

Why did legislators vote for this bill when they had previously been against it? Senator Ben Nelson, Nebraska Democrat, received $55 million in extra Medicaid funding for his state, Senator Mary Landrieu received $300 million in Medicaid funding for the Louisiana Democrat’s home state. These are just two examples of closed door dealing to get the bill passed. What has happened to the integrity of American citizens and leaders. It seems anything can be bought for a price. Citizens vote for representatives who get the most for them, so it isn’t just the leaders but also the people.
