          Capitol Updates

Deadlines Are Quickly Approaching!

Today is the last day for bills to pass out of their house of origin, which translates to two days of an extremely efficient Legislature. If only they could get this much work done all year! Many of the bills we have been watching have already advanced out of their house of origin, but below are some bills that were just given life that might be of some interest…

SB 1449: Leno (D-3) Reclassifies marijuana possession of less than 1 oz from a misdemeanor to an infraction with a penalty of $100

SR 44: Kehoe (D-39) Establishes June as LGBT [Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender] Pride Month

AB 1934: Saldana (D-76) Outlaws the carrying of unloaded handguns in public

AB 1998: Brownley (D-41) Bans the use of plastic bags at groceries, pharmacies, convenience and liquor stores

Budget Deadline

According to our state’s constitution, our budget is to be passed by June 15th. For those of us keeping track, that is 11 days away. Yet we are still $19 billion dollar short, and no closer to agreeing on a solution. As the Capitol Update revealed last week, the Legislative Democrats want to approve $5 billion dollars in taxes to avoid cuts in spending. Nothing significant was accomplished this week, so be sure to check back with the Capitol Update next week for (hopefully) some progress!

PRIMARY ELECTION THIS TUESDAY!

The Primary Election is this Tuesday, June 8th. Please remember to either turn in your Vote-By-Mail ballots or visit your local polling place and VOTE! The propositions on this ballot may have lasting effects on how we vote in this state, it is imperative we VOTE NO on PROPS 14 and 15!! For our full guide of primary proposition recommendations, visit our website here.

RegTrax Update

At our annual Advocacy Workshop this year, CRP Counties Chairman Mark Pruner gave a great presentation about the CRP’s newest voter registration initiative, RegTrax. The CFRW and the CRP have a long history of working together in registering new voters. RegTrax will help in registering and re-registering Republicans who have moved into or within our state. We have uploaded a useful guide on our website on using RegTrax, here.

Tracking Legislation

Although we are unable to give our members access to our web-based bill tracking service, there is a way you can find and monitor California legislation. You can access that information on the internet by going to the Legislature Home Page and completing the information on the right side by either indicating the bill number, the author, or key words. You can then subscribe to an email update and you will be notified when there is action on legislation of interest to you

Disclaimer: The Capitol Update is an activity of the CFRW Advocate's Office. The update is for information only. CFRW official positions on legislation are stated immediately preceding the stated legislation or immediately following the stated legislation in this report.
