| Allison Olson, Legislative Advocate
Ronald Reagan Day Update! A hearing date is set for SB 944 (Runner, R-17) Ronald Reagan Day. Your CFRW Legislative Advocate will be testifying in support of SB 944, but still more help is needed! Last week in the Capitol Update a sample Letter of Support was printed for our members to use as a guide. The sample letter was addressed to the Senate Education Committee Chair, but we need letters to go to the Assembly Education Chair, Julia Brownley (D). You can contact the Assembly Education Committee by phone at (916) 319-2087 or email Chairwoman Brownley at Assemblymember.Brownley@asm.ca.gov. Also, Senator Runner’s office still needs hard copies of letters, so please send your support letters to: Senator George Runner State Capitol Room 4090 Sacramento, Ca 95814 Phone: 916-651-4017 Fax: 916-445-4662 Or you can email Julie.louie@sen.ca.gov in Senator Runner’s office your letter of support. We have three weeks to show our support, so call, write, and email!! Budget Battle Wages On There is new news from the budget battle front. As we reported previously, the Governor’s May Revise was generally well received by Republicans and scorned by Democrats in the Legislature. In response to the Governor’s cuts in welfare and social services, the Senate Democrats proposed $4.9 billion in new taxes while Assembly Democrats plan to borrow $9 billion from Wall Street and then pay it back over 20 years with another oil tax. Unfortunately, the Democrat’s plan does not have any long terms solutions and could potentially put the state in an even more difficult position next year because spending would increase without a new source of revenue. Of course, the Democrats had a chance to reduce some of the deficit between January and May when the Governor proposed $5 billion dollars in cuts, but they preferred to wait until the May Revise to propose a plan, resulting in $2.8 billion of additional budget solutions lost. So what now? Assemblyman Torrico (D-20) suggests letting Republicans take the fall for the Democrat's mess. He said, “Democrats should allow the state to reach a more desperate state of affairs if Republicans do not agree to raise taxes”. A more desperate state of affairs? Obviously, Assemblyman Torrico hasn’t stepped out of his office recently. It doesn’t get more desperate than this! The time for political games is over and the time to act is now!
