Ronald Reagan Day in CA? SUPPORT!

This week the CFRW Voting Body decided to SUPPORT SB 944 (Runner, R-17), proposing Ronald Reagan Day in California. Finally! Next year on February 6th, it will be the anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday. If SB 944 passes, the Governor will proclaim that February 6th will annually be celebrated as Ronald Reagan Day. When Ronald Reagan was Governor of California, he was instrumental in establishing the CFRW Legislative Advocate’s Office! He was always a supporter of the California Federation of Republican Women, so it is our turn to support his legacy! Currently SB 944 is waiting to be read in the Assembly Education Committee. Please call your Assembly member and let them know you are a member of the California Federation of Republican Women and you support Ronald Reagan Day!

Citizens Redistricting Commission Update

Last week a three member Application Review Panel met to select the finalists for the Citizens Redistricting Commission. There are 14 spots on the Commission and 4,300 finalists. If you are a CFRW member and have made it through the application process to this point, congratulations! You may have a bigger job than you originally bargained for because on Wednesday an addition to the original Prop 11 Redistricting initiative qualified for the November general election ballot. This proposition would extend the redistricting to include Congressional districts. Keep reading the Capitol Update for more information as it develops.

Drilling Project Plug Pulled

On Monday Governor Schwarzenegger decided to terminate the scheduled Santa Barbara off-shore drilling project because of the recent oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico. Although the Governor has been fighting for the Tranquillon Ridge Project for 2 years, he said in a statement on Monday that he doesn’t want to take the risk of a massive oil spill off our coast. The drilling project, from an existing oil platform, would have brought the state approximately $100 million dollars a year. Regarding this loss of potential revenue, the Governor stated, “I’d rather just figure out how to make up for that $100 million”.

Updates on Our Website!

Under the “Guides and Forms” section of our Member Center on our website, we have two new editions: “Procedures for CFRW Conferences” and “Color Guard and Inspirational Message”.

Tracking Legislation

Although we are unable to give our members access to our web-based bill tracking service, there is a way you can find and monitor California legislation. You can access that information on the internet by going to the Legislature Home Page and completing the information on the right side by either indicating the bill number, the author, or key words. You can then subscribe to an email update and you will be notified when there is action on legislation of interest to you

Disclaimer: The Capitol Update is an activity of the CFRW Advocate's Office. The update is for information only. CFRW official positions on legislation are stated immediately preceding the stated legislation or immediately following the stated legislation in this report.
