Prop 17: NO RECOMMENDATION

Earlier this week the CFRW Voting Body decided to reconsider Prop 17. This proposition deals with car insurance coverage and “good driver” discounts. The CFRW Voting Body voted to switch their recommendation from a Support position to NO RECOMMENDATION. After reviewing new information of the proposition, it is unclear if the proposition will be potentially more helpful or harmful to consumers. The CFRW Voting Body took a support position very early in the initiative process, along with other conservative groups, but with this new information, the Voting Body feels that the best position to take is no recommendation. We urge our members to make a decision based on their experience with car insurance.

I would like to also explain the difference between opposing a proposition and making no recommendation. If the CFRW OPPOSES a proposition, that means we recommend voting NO. On the other hand, when the CFRW makes no recommendation, this means that the Voting Body does not feel a position should be made; instead they encourage our members to make the vote that is right for them.

That being said, I want to remind our members not to lose sight of the bigger picture. While it is important to make informed, educated decisions on all of our propositions, some are definitely more significant than others. This June, two propositions could drastically change the way we vote in California. Opposing Props 14 and 15 needs to be the focus of our proposition education! I will be posting the analyses of these props, as analyzed by our Legislative Analysts, on our website next week. In the month leading up to the primary, please remember to encourage family, friends, neighbors, even the checker at the supermarket, to vote NO on Props 14 and 15!

Steinberg to Schwarzenegger: “Let’s Boycott Arizona!”

After Arizona passed its new immigration enforcement law, instantly there were protests across the country. But none so inane as California Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg asking Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to boycott Arizona. Steinberg (D- 6) urged the Governor to review all state contracts and potentially break them as a punishment for Arizona’s new law. At a time where our state is almost $20 billion underwater, I don’t think it is the right time to be preachy. Arizona acted within their state’s right to implement this new law and Steinberg should be focusing his worries elsewhere… Like our impending budget deadline!

Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado

Senator Abel Maldonado was sworn in this week as Lieutenant Governor. His nomination and confirmation process was decidedly smoother than the first time around. The new Lt. Governor will not have much of a chance to get too comfortable… he is competing in the Lt. Governor Republican Primary against Senator Sam Aanestad (R-4). A Republican has not been Lt. Governor since the 70’s! Stay tuned to see how this new primary battle will turn out.

Updates on Our Website!

Under the “Guides and Forms” section of our Member Center on our website, we have two new editions: “Procedures for CFRW Conferences” and “Color Guard and Inspirational Message”.

Tracking Legislation

Although we are unable to give our members access to our web-based bill tracking service, there is a way you can find and monitor California legislation. You can access that information on the internet by going to the Legislature Home Page and completing the information on the right side by either indicating the bill number, the author, or key words. You can then subscribe to an email update and you will be notified when there is action on legislation of interest to you
