Action Alert!! ACR 82 Ladies, immediate action is needed! The CFRW Voting Body has taken an OPPOSE position to ACR 82. Now it is your turn to stop it! ACR 82 (Hall, D-52) would establish that every public school in California, from prekindergarten to our universities, be declared a “Discrimination-Free Zone”. Being a product of the public university system, I certainly do not remember my campus being a bastion of discrimination. I was unaware that discrimination and hate were running rampant in our public schools. ACR 82 would encourage teachers and administrators to punish students if they believe the student is “intolerant”. In other words, if a student at any level supports or speaks in favor of the natural family or traditional values, they would be disciplined for “hate speech”. Absurd! The resolution is currently in the Assembly, waiting to pass the Senate amendments. Call your Assembly member and tell them to vote NO. THE VOTE IS ON MONDAY, APRIL 12th! CONATCT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND ACT NOW! Prop 16: CFRW Reevaluates the Proposition Several Capitol Updates ago, the CFRW released our Primary Ballot Voting Guide. After further investigation and analysis of Prop 16, the Voting Body has decided to change from a recommendation of support for Prop 16 to NO RECOMMENDATION. We believe that because the diversity of the organization, it is better for us to leave this proposition up to the decision of individual members, since electricity providers affect us all in different ways. I encourage our members to research this proposition and find out how it would affect you! SCA 30: 72 Hour Public Notification Period… Finally! This week the CFRW Voting Body voted to SUPPORT SCA 30 (Huff, R-29). Finally, legislation that makes sense! SCA 30 would establish a 72 hour public review period on all legislation after amendments are made and before it can be passed in committee. Currently there are no statutes requiring the public to be notified if a bill is amended in committee. SCA would make bills available online for 72 hours before a committee can vote on the legislation. This bill would increase transparency and hopefully provide greater public participation in government. We commend Senator Huff for introducing this bill and we look forward to following through to its passage! Tracking Legislation Although we are unable to give our members access to our web-based bill tracking service, there is a way you can find and monitor California legislation. You can access that information on the internet by going to the Legislature Home Page and completing the information on the right side by either indicating the bill number, the author, or key words. You can then subscribe to an email update and you will be notified when there is action on legislation of interest to you Disclaimer: The Capitol Update is an activity of the CFRW Advocate's Office. The update is for information only. CFRW official positions on legislation are stated immediately preceding the stated legislation or immediately following the stated legislation in this report.
